The Experience

Are you looking for trip that would worth your while? Then the search is over for we have her our Ontario Wildlife Care project done in Canada! Rescue and rehabilitate wildlife at the center that takes in injured, orphaned and abandoned wildlife so that they may one day be released back into the Wild!

This project is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing native wildlife. approximately 500 animals are cared for annually by a team of professionally trained volunteers under the strict directions and rules of the Authorized Wildlife Custodian. The project plays an integral role in community education and works in cooperation with Hamilton Animal Control, Lincoln County Humane Society, Ministry of Natural Resources.

  • Who Are They Looking For?
    Love of the outdoors and a passion for wildlife is a priority. You should not be fussy, picky or hypersensitive about cleaning as this is one of the main chores.  We will not tolerate smoking, alcohol or the use of drugs. Please remember that you are a guest, therefore, respecting the rules is essential. Need to be physically and mentally fit and must be initiative. Good sense of humor and must be okay with communicating with others.

  • RESPONSIBILITIES
    Volunteers at the project are the main force that pushes the organization forward with its goal and objectives of rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing Native Canadian Wildlife. It is also important to keep in mind that this is a fast paced, intense, and physically demanding environment and some of the tasks that volunteers will be involved in are as follows (Training will be provided):
    • Feeding the animals. learning to tube the animals when they are too small to be able to feed by hand.
    • Cleaning and sterilizing their cages, preparing the food and formula for them. Doing the laundry.
    • Cleaning the feeding bowls and bottles etc. Putting out the garbage and blue bins once a week.
    • Sweeping the floors when necessary. Tidying up the back enclosure where we keep the outside animals. Cleaning and sweeping out the large outdoor enclosures.
  • TASKS AND DUTIES

    Working at a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center can be very intense at times because of the hours we sometimes have to keep. There may be evening feedings.  Volunteers will be expected to be involved in all aspects of the shelter. Your job will include feeding, food preparation, cleaning, laundry, etc.

  • Requirements, Guidelines & Policies
    • Required to commit to a minimum of 4 weeks
    • The volunteers should wear old clothing to volunteer and bring a pair of footwear designated for use at the center.  Slip on (short or knee high) wellington rubber boots are the best (keeps your feet dry when hosing down cages) but you can wear running shoes if you prefer.
    • NO SMOKING is allowed on the property.
    • Strong work ethics are required: reliable, responsible, honest, good sense of humour, dependable, physically and mentally fit.
    • Age: 18+ The maximum age requirement - As long as applicants are mobile, fit and healthy you could be 80 years old, we would not mind.  We find that seniors are extremely reliable, so as long as they are fit, strong and healthy we would welcome them with open arms!
    • No animal allergies
    • The care of animals must be secured around the clock and work may include night shifts
    • Extreme Weather (heat & cold), dirt and living in a remote area must be something you can handle.
    • A love for animals and some general experience of caring for an animal is a must!
    • Must read and agree to abide by guidelines and ethics
    • Proof of current tetanus shot & medical insurance; Good physical stamina and health
    • Good communication skills and the ability to work alone and Good knowledge of the English.
    • Patient and comfortable around mammals and birds. Volunteers would need an up to date Tetanus shot (compulsory) - This would only allow them to work with Squirrels
    • Volunteers would need a pre-exposure rabies shot if they wished to work with all the species of animals at the center.  THE PROJECT PREFERS THAT YOU DO!
    • A valid driver’s license would be an asset, but is not required

  • Itinerary & Details
    Day 1 - Arrive in Ontario, Canada; 
    You will arrive in beautiful Ontario where you will be met at the airport and transferred to the volunteer project.
    For 4 - 12 weeks - Help, rescue and rehabilitate orphaned and injured animals! For the coming 4 - 12 weeks you will have a great time working directly with many different kind of animals while living in beautiful Ontario!
    Your last day - you will be transferred back to the airport to take a flight back home. Of course it is possible to extend your stay in Canada and travel around or visit other cities; we can help you with trips and/or accommodation you would like to arrange.
  • Accommodation

    Your Homestay accommodation will be arranged by FRONTEERING near the volunteer project. Homestay: live with a Canadian family and includes your own bedroom, laundry facility in the house, wireless internet, cable TV and meals. Of course, you can also make use of the living room, kitchen and washroom. It’s a great way to get to know the real Greater Ontario Area and improve your English.

    Things to bring from home

    • Clothes for cold temperatures as well as for summer for warm temperatures. Make these clothes are allowed to get dirty. Make sure to bring gloves, a toque and warm socks with you.
    • Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and you should also pack a raincoat and some sun block
    • Linen and towels will be provided.

    Meals

    You will be provided with 3 meals a day on weekends and two (breakfast and dinner) on weekdays, specific catering available on request only.

    Location

    The volunteer project is located in UWC is located in Grimsby, Ontario and is run by Authorized Wildlife Custodian.  Whether it is enjoying the nature, ski or snowboard, mountain bike, hike, or visiting Ontario Downtown there is plenty to do near the volunteer station on your days of.
